James R. Muldoon

Mr. Muldoon is a member of the firm and the Intellectual Property Practice Group. He also serves on the Science and Technology Commercialization and the Medical and Life Sciences Industry Teams. His practice focuses on the enforcement and defense of intellectual property infringement and related claims in federal and state courts and in arbitration. Mr. Muldoon has been actively involved in a large number of patent infringement lawsuits, encompassing diverse technologies such as compression-style coaxial cable connectors, argon gas-assisted electro-coagulation probes, and macroporous media for high performance liquid chromatography columns. He has also litigated federal trademark, unfair competition and antitrust claims and represented plaintiffs in copyright infringement actions on behalf of software publishers and performing rights organizations. In addition to IP litigation, Mr. Muldoon prosecutes patent and trademark applications in a wide range of technologies such as electrical connectors and diplex filters for the cable television industry, medical devices, high alloy tool steels, chromatography columns, microsphere and hydrogel adhesives, automotive components, cross-head extrusion die assemblies, and recreational equipment. He also counsels clients and participates in the assessments of intellectual property portfolios and the licensing and sale of intellectual property rights, as well as advising several university clients in technology transfer programs. Mr. Muldoon received an AV rating in Martindale-Hubbell. He has been included in the upstate New York edition of New York Super Lawyers annually since 2007. Before joining Harris Beach, Mr. Muldoon was a named partner of a Syracuse law firm. He has served as a Navy Judge Advocate and a Navy Pilot.

Mr. Muldoon is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), the Licensing Executive Society (USA and Canada), MIT Educational Council, New York State Bar Association (Intellectual Property and Commercial and Federal Litigation Sections), Central New York Patent Law Association, Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association, and Onondaga County Bar Association. Mr. Muldoon is very active in charitable and civic organizations in central New York, including: serving as chairman and trustee of the Loretto Management Corporation, chairman and trustee of the Loretto Foundation, Inc., chairman and trustee of PACE CNY, member of the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Counsel (2000-2003), president and director of Exceptional Family Resources, Inc. (1994-2000), member of the steering committee of the Autism Support Group;, chairman of the M&T Bank Loretto FUTURES Professional Golf Tournament (2002, 2003), and member of the Cavalry Club Golf Board and tournament chairman. He is a 1999 recipient of 40 Under 40 by Leadership Syracuse.
