Phillip Brothman
Of Counsel
Mr. Brothman is of counsel to the firm. He practices in the Life and Asset Planning Practice Group. He also serves on the Financial Institutions and Capital Markets and Educational Institutions Industry Teams. He focuses his legal practice primarily in the areas of school and municipal law, life and asset planning, estate administration, estate taxation, and general corporate and banking law.
Mr. Brothman began his legal career as an estate and gift tax attorney with the Internal Revenue Service. He entered the private practice of law in Angola, New York with Floyd H. Hurst and formed Hurst & Brothman in 1966. The firm later became Hurst Brothman & Yusick and merged with Harris Beach in 2004.
Professional & Community Activities
Mr. Brothman is a member of the New York State, Florida, and Erie County Bar Associations. He is a member and past president of the New York State Association of School Attorneys and has served as its treasurer since 1984.
Mr. Brothman has provided pro-bono counsel to Graycliff Conservancy, Inc., a non-profit organization formed to purchase, restore and operate the Isabelle Martin summer home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, since its formation in 1997. He is also a member and past president of the University of Buffalo Law Alumni Association.
Mr. Brothman is a director and serves as chairman of the board of Evans Bancorp, Inc. and Evans National Bank. He is a former director of the Evans/Brant Chamber of Commerce and Lakeshore Hospital, Inc., and a former director and past president of Lakeshore Hospital Foundation, Inc. Mr. Brothman is a member of Temple Beth Zion and a former member of its Brotherhood Board of Directors and Temple Board of Directors. A former Cub Scout Master, he was the 1976 recipient of the prestigious Aleph Award.
