On May 3, 2021, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced increased capacity limits for indoor and outdoor gatherings, which will affect the number of spectators allowed at school sporting events. On May 10, 2021, the state’s gathering limits for outdoor activities increased to 500 individuals. As of May 19, 2021, the indoor gathering limit will increase to 250 individuals.

In alignment with such changes, school districts may allow the following number of spectators at their sporting events:

  • For outdoor sporting events, districts may allow the greater of two spectators per participant or 500 individuals total.
  • For indoor sporting events (effective May 19, 2021), districts may allow the greater of two spectators per participant or 250 individuals total.

Event gatherings in excess of these social gathering limits may occur only if all individuals present proof of full vaccination status or a recent negative COVID-19 test result. Social distancing and masking requirements still apply.
