Vince Buzard was Program Chair of Meet the Justices of the Appellate Division
Dec 22, 2016
Vince Buzard was Program Chair and moderator, and Lana Ivy was a panelist at the New York State Bar Association program entitled “Meet the Justices of the Appellate Division” held Nov. 29, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester. Over 150 attorneys from Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and other areas in the Fourth Department attended the sold out program. Vince worked closely with Presiding Justice Hon. Gerald J. Whalen to ensure that all 11 of the Justices were present, as shown on the photo from the Daily Record.
Vince, Lana and the other panelists “peppered the judges” (in the words of the Daily Record) with a series of questions researching their recommendations for effective appellate practice in their court. As stated in the Daily Record article, following are a few of the tips:
- “Keep it brief - A recurring theme at the event was an emphasis on brevity, both in briefs and oral arguments.”
- “Charts, timelines, photos - The justices agreed that including pictures in the brief can be helpful, but they must be photos that are already in the record.”
- “Don’t rehash facts –The justices typically read the briefs and relevant parts of the record, but not the entire record. They read decisions by the trial court and reports written to each other.”
- “Submitted Arguments – Submitted arguments, rather than an attorney making an oral argument, can be frustrating to the justices.”
