Partner Douglas Gerhardt of our educational institutions industry team spoke to the Buffalo News about Maryvale School District in Cheektowaga suing a Buffalo resident for more than $11,000 in tuition costs because the son attended school in the Maryvale Union Free School District according to documents filed in State Supreme Court. The district says the family did not live in the district.
Gerhardt weighed in on this unique legal matter. “If the parent doesn’t pay, it does become a problem; usually the parent arranges a payment structure,” said Gerhardt. “I’ve been in districts that sent warning letters to nonresident parents who did not pay for the education. The next step would be to file a formal action against the parent, but that is unusual.”
