Emergency measures taken during the COVID19 pandemic continue to drive medical device recalls in 2022, according to Judi Abbott Curry, partner with the Harris Beach Medical and Life Sciences Team.
Writing in 2022 Edition 3 of the Sedgwick State of the National Brand Recall Index, Judi identifies three themes driving recall activity:
- COVID-19 rapid home tests, which have faced recalls for a range of reasons, including an unauthorized shelf-life date.
- Ventilators and ventilator parts, which were in high demand at the start of the pandemic and as a result have drawn patient safety concerns.
- Catheters, which can fail at the tip, balloon, market band, catheter hub or a junction. These issues are unrelated to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Sedgwick index includes insights from thought leaders addressing risks in various industries, including life sciences, food and beverage and automotive products.
